Leeds Rowing Club- Peterborough Regatta August 2008 -Saturday - 1000mMens S4 IVs - after our good run at St Neots we had one crew in this category. They crew came up against some very strong crews from Thames, Oxford City and Hertfordshire Uni. The squad fought hard all the way down the course and were very unlucky not to qualify to the next round. Womens S4 IV - there were two crews in this category. The first crew to race were found themselves against a strong crew from Peterborough and Milton Keynes. The crew lost by a just over a length but should take comfort in that they had never rowed as a crew before and had one non-rower in their mist! The second crew to race were found themselves up against Staines and Cambridge 99. Again a tough heat and although the crew didn't make it through they showed their fighting spirit and ability to be able to work as a team. Womens S3 2x - made it through to reportage but unfortunately didn't make it through to the final. Sunday - 500mWell the weather proved to be a challenge to all crews and was as we say typically English - stong winds, rain, grey and overcast which progressively got worse over time. Spirits however were not dampened as all had enjoyed a good evening, watching the laid on entertainment from other rowing clubs. Mens S4 The crew competing set out with revenge on their minds to prove we are a 500m club to be reckoned with. They had a storming victory over Leeds University but lost in a tough second heat. Mens S3 The crew competing were rowed better on the second day and just missed out to qualifying to a strong RAF and Warwick crew. Womens S4 IV - the crew found themselves deservingly through to the final. They fought hard but unfortunately lost to some very strong opposition. Womens S3 2x - should have qualified but Karen spectacularly caught two consistent crabs! Mixed S3 2x - decided to take on the challenge for their first mixed race and Matt's first skulling event. They fought hard but lost to a very impressive Imperial crew. Although no wins for the club we still proved to be very competitive and we should be all proud of our efforts. All would agree that the standard at this year's event was impressive and gave (certainly a few of us) the inspiration to train harder and come back with vengeance at the next regatta. - St Neots Race Report August 2008 -Saturday - 1000mA glorious summer day and a well-run regatta with Leeds RC occupying prime spectator real estate near the finish.... Mens S4 IVs - after our success at York we had two crews in this category - One won their first round against Norwich but then came up against a strong Peterborough RC crew in the semi final and lost by a couple of lengths. The other - lost the other semi against another strong Peterborough crew. Womens S4 IV - beat Milton Keynes in their semi-final, then fought a nailbiting race against Lea RC in the final - no-one on the bank was sure who had won until the verdict came through of 1/2 canvas to Lee....ds ! Womens S4 1x - maintained her winning form with convincing wins over scullers from Northampton and Bedford, followed by a closer race in the final against a Globe RC sculler whom she beat by 2 lengths. Mens S4 1x - beat a Globe RC sculler in the semi (despite some very wayward steering..) then beat a Peterborough RC sculler in the final (gaining some revenge on behalf of the mens' squad!). Womens S4 2x - enjoyed a straight final against Cambridge 99, winning in style to round the day off. Sunday - 500mStarted grey and overcast, became baking hot and ended with sharp showers, but the weather didn't keep the Leeds supporters from the bank.... : Mens S4 IVs - The first crew set out with revenge on their minds against the same Peterborough crew that beat them the day before. With a much better start they found themselves up, but couldn't quite match the other crew for length and lost by 1 length. The second crew - also rowed better than the previous day but couldn't match the power of a Beccles RC crew (despite rowing more tidily). Although both menŐs crews were rather disappointed, it is worth pointing out that the Peterborough crew that won S4 on Saturday went on to win S3 on Sunday too, and the two crews which beat Leeds on Sunday each won a further race before fighting a very close final, which Beccles won by 1/2 length. Womens S3 IV - raced bravely but lost by 2 lengths to Nottingham. Womens S4 2x - 1st women's double beat Northampton easily to reach the final but our new second doubles combination showed they would be no pushovers with a solid win over another Northampton double. The regatta ended with an ALL Leeds Final. Thanks again to all those who supported from the bank. |
